A few weeks ago, the Edmonton Oilers made a strategic partnership with "Play Alberta" an online sports book and casino catered to Alberta residents. With this new merger, the Play Alberta logo will be showcased on all the Oilers home jerseys this season. Initially, the news didn't sit well with Oilers fans as they were one of the last teams in the league to not have their jerseys tarnished with sponsors. Now, the latest reports indicate that fans will be paying an added fee to purchase the jersey.
Oiler fans took to Reddit.com and express their anger and disbelief that they would
have to pay for this fee.
Another fan chose to defend the patch and explained many fans would like to wear exactly what their favorite players are wearing.
As per Hall, advertising on jerseys in the NHL has not been a favorable idea by the league and the NHL teams. NHL fans take pride in their jerseys and feel that advertising takes away from the authenticity and the pride that the jersey represents. On the other hand, the NHL is a business along with their franchises and have decided that this route is the way to go to help grow their revenue. Most other teams in the NHL are doing the same.
Hopefully Oilers enthusiasts will be able to purchase an Oilers Fanatics jersey without the "Play Alberta" logo on it. Although it's a mere $10 fee, fans don't feel enthused about forking out more money. There's already big complaints of gouging regarding the cost of concession and ticket prices, and this doesn't seem to help one bit.
