As per Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily, Brannstrom was a 15th overall draft pick of the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017. He was dealt to the Ottawa Senators in the blockbuster deal that sent Mark Stone to Vegas, and Brannstrom went on to play parts of the next six seasons with the Senators. Brannstrom has clear offensive talent and skill, but was never able to put it together with Ottawa. Brannstrom was signed by Colorado in free agency on a one year deal for just $900K, but they're trading him before he played one game for them.
To make matters a bit more intriguing, right after the trade was announced, the Vancouver Canucks placed Brannstrom on waivers. It would seem that the Canucks are more interested in getting out of Poolman's contract, as his game has been steadily declining and has a hefty price tag attached to him.
According to Puckpedia, Tucker Poolman is currently signed to a 4-year contract with a cap hit of $2,500,000 per season. His contract expires at the end of the 2024-25 season, when Poolman is 32 years old.
If Brannstrom happens to clear waivers unscathed, the Vancouver Canucks could emerge as big time winners in this trade. If Brannstrom manages to get his game back, the Canucks will be getting a top prospect who could be a key depth player moving forward.
