The city of Calgary and the Flames organization have finally reached a deal to build a new arena, after much debate and back-and-forth arguments. The announcement, made yesterday, indicates a cost of over one billion dollars. Interestingly, the public will be funding numerous parts of the project, alongside some private funding.
NDP leader Rachel Notley has expressed her opinion on this deal, which will use over $870 million of taxpayers' money.
Despite the announcement, much of the deal remains shrouded in secrecy. The public can expect more information after the upcoming Alberta Election Day. Oilers fans in Edmonton may take an interest in the deal, as they had to fund their new arena, the Rogers Arena, entirely on their own. Oilers owner Daryl Katz found the necessary funding and built an impressive structure. As the public demands more answers, more details may emerge.
It is worth noting that companies should fund these projects themselves and not rely on taxpayers' money, as those who will use the building will ultimately pay for seats and entertainment expenses.
