The Oilers recently had a meltdown performance during the Las Vegas Golden Knights game, losing the game with just seconds left on the clock.
To add insult to injury, the Oilers top defensive pairing comprised of Mattias Ekholm and Evan Bouchard were exposed during the opening goal of the game, and the game winning goal - further emphasizing the need for improvement.
In a addition to that, the Oilers second pairing hasn't faired much better. As it stands, Darnell Nurse has been on the ice for 50% of goals scored against and continues to struggle to live up to his $9.2 million dollar contract.
As it stands, the Oilers are in dire need of some added support regarding their backend, but it begs the simple question - who should the Oilers go after?
As per Bob Stauffer, he believes that the Oilers are still very much in the market to acquire a shutdown defenceman, which he knows could very well happen in the near future.
But in a surprising turn, Stauffer argues that rather than acquiring a shutdown D-man, the team would be far better suited acquiring a right shot defender who can play and transition the puck.
Currently, the Oilers don't have many options that fit that description. The Oilers have two of the most dynamic goal scorers in the NHL, but don't have any assets on the back-end to help transition the puck efficiently to their elite forwards.
Oilers GM Stan Bowman has a tough task ahead of him, as the market currently presents very little options for what Bob Stauffer feels the team needs.
