Former Oilers Player Currently Facing Major Fraud Charges In His Home Country
It was just reported that former Edmonton Oilers player Esa Tikkanen is facing criminal charges for aggravated tax fraud in his home country. Tikkanen, who is currently 58 years old, has refuted the accusations and maintains that he did not commit any offense. The alleged offences took place between 2015 and 2019, involving income that Tikkanen earned abroad.
Although authorities in Finland had seized assets worth up to $178,000 US from Tikkanen, the decision has been overturned. No court date for the hearing has been scheduled yet.
The Oilers' 4th round pick in 1983 has played 522 games in the span of nine seasons in Edmonton. He won four Stanley Cups in those years and contributed with 178 goals and 258 assists for a total of 436 points. He also had a +144 plus-minus and 759 penalty minutes.
Tikkanen played a key role in helping the team win four Stanley Cup championships (in 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1990). He was known for his gritty play, defensive skills, and ability to score timely goals in crucial moments.
