According to Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily, Behind the play, Perry and Veleno met up at the blue line to drop the gloves after a big hit on Derek Ryan. Both players were swinging some awesome blows, with Corey Perry connecting at one point on a full series of uppercuts. Perry had the advantage in the fight in the first half before it moved along the boards, and Veleno got his kicks back. Still, Perry was able to get up and hold his own in the fight.
After the fight, the two players offered each other a brief moment of respect. Despite Perry being 39 years of age, he's clearly a highly respected player in the NHL.
Corey Perry has been an absolute menace for the Oilers this season. During the game against the Nashville Predators, Perry took on fellow heavy weight Micheal McCarron in a spirited tilt as well. Perry is obviously coming into the 2024-25 season with a different mindset, taking every opportunity to stick up for his teammates.
McCormick adds that as long as Perry is still chuckin' em like this, the Oilers may need to keep his toughness in the bottom six. We'll have to see if the Oilers respond at all to Perry's fight in the second period, still down by one goal to Detroit.
The Oilers will do everything in their power to beat the Detroit Red Wings to even up their record, and veteran Corey Perry is leading the charge for the Oilers.
