Former Calgary Flames captain Mark Giordano looking for a new home
Former Calgary Flames captain Mark Giordano is looking to kill the stigma of age in the NHL.
Everyone knows that age in the NHL is often viewed as negative. But in the case of Mark Giordano, he's aged like a fine wine, finding most of his NHL success late in his career. He won the Norris Trophy at the age of 37, now at 40 years of age, he's looking for a new city to call home in order to prove his value.
The long-time Calgary Flames defenceman has 158 goals and 577 points in 1,148 career NHL games. He won the Norris Trophy with the Flames as team captain in 2019. Two years later, he was selected by the Seattle Kraken in their expansion draft, spending 55 games as team captain before he was dealt to the Maple Leafs at the trade deadline in 2022. He is coming off a two-year, $1.6 million deal signed to stay with the Maple Leafs ahead of reaching free agency in 2022.
Yesterday, Giordano's agent Ritch Winter made an appearance on the Jason Gregor Show podcast where he discussed Giordano's intent to play for a few more seasons. Even at the age of 40, Winter claims that Giordano is in the best shape of his life and could potentially be a "bargain" for an NHL club.
"He'll not have a Norris season cause wherever he plays, he's not playing for his power-play like he did then. But he'll be a good top 4, minimum top 6 who out performs everybody. But I need to help over come the biases, cause what's his problem? He's 40...so what?"
Winter claims that Giordano is in the best shape of his life and could still provide top 4 minutes. In the case of the Edmonton Oilers, maybe signing Giordano to a PTO could be something to look at. With the departure of Cody Ceci, theres a hole left to be filled on the Oilers blue-line.
