Insider reveals Tyson Barrie is a lock for the Flames
As NHL fans await the debut of the NHL regular season, The Calgary Flames are going to need all the help they can get.
According to Liam McCormick from Oilers Daily, NHL insider Frank Seravalli said on Flames Talk today that Barrie will be finalizing a deal to stay with Calgary this season.
Now 33 years old, Barrie is trying to bounce back after a very difficult time with the Nashville Predators. Barrie was repeatedly a healthy scratch as the Predators' weren't pleased with his defensive game, and it went as far as Barrie requesting a trade. He played 41 games last season and posted just 15 points with a brutal -10 rating. A move never materialized, and Barrie now has to build back his reputation as a quality NHL defenceman.
The Calgary Flames aren't predicted to do very well this season. They lack elite top 6 pedigree, in addition to massive caps concerning their back-end. Signing a proven veteran like Barrie will be an extremely wise decision for the Flames if they want to bolster their offence, specifically on the power play.
As per Daily Hive, Playing on the power play has been one of Barrie's biggest strengths throughout his 809-game career. He's recorded north of 50 points in three separate seasons and led all NHL defencemen in the shortened 2020-21 season with 48 points in 56 games as a member of the Edmonton Oilers.
Other players who will be battling alongside Barrie for spots include Brzustewicz, Brayden Pachal, Ilya Solovyov, Jarred Tinordi, and perhaps even 2024 first-round pick Zayne Parekh. Oilers Insider will be keeping an eye out for an official Flames announcement regarding a Tyson Barrie contract.
