A focal point for the team thus far has been the struggling power play unit. The Oilers PP is known to be the most dynamic special teams unit in the NHL, but has been «out of sync» scoring just one goal through 6 games.
There has been ongoing conversation of replacing Ryan Nugent-Hopins with the red hot Jeff Skinner on the top unit, but Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch remains hesitant to make drastic changes so early in the season.
According to Ryan Hall of Oilers Daily, Knoblauch explained that assistant coach Glenn Gulutzan who runs the Oilers power play has shown time and time again that it remains at the top of the NHL even though they have wanted to change it over the years.
Through six games played, the Oilers are currently running a power play of 6.7% and is 1 for 15 which puts them at 30th overall in the NHL. This number is unacceptable and will not allow a team to succeed as the team sits at 2-4-0 with a winning percentage of .333.
The Edmonton Oilers are no stranger to offensive slumps. Although the team has started off slowly this year, historically, the team is statistically better when they do so - (which sounds crazy). Although fans and media alike seem keen to press the panic button, Kris Knoblauch seems keen to ride out the storm by letting the players figure it out for themselves.
