During the latest segment of the Jason Gregor Show podcast, insider Allan Mitchell provided fans some insight into the Oilers PTO options.

Travis Dermott is no stranger to the NHL. He found the bulk of his success playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2017-2022, but has bounced around the league since then. Dermott played with the Arizona Coyotes last season, but struggled to gain much traction, posting only 7 points through 50 games and was a -14 rating on the ice.

Despite struggling the past few seasons, Allan Mitchell believes that Dermott will likely be signed as a PTO and has a really good chance at cracking the Oilers roster. In addition, Kurt Leavins from the Edmonton journal backs up the comments from Mitchell, stating that Dermott may emerge as the top candidate for PTO considerations.

»Justin Schultz is a possibility in Edmonton. As I indicated last week, the two sides have talked. But I suspect Schultz is looking for a contracts as opposed to just a PTO. And who could blame him? The Kevin Shattenkirk reports are plausible. But it is more likely that we could see the likes of Travis Dermott. Yes, he is a lefty but comfortably plays both sides. He was coached by (wait for it) Kris Knoblauch in Erie and was represented in the past by Jeff Jackson. There is a split-squad game with the Flames on the twenty-third. They will need 12 D-men for that.»

According to Liam McCormick from Oilers Daily, There's a handful of reasons Travis Dermott is the best candidate for the Oilers to sign to a tryout contract. He's got a history with Coach Knoblauch and Jeff Jackson, and it seems Dermott is more amenable to a PTO while Shattenkirk and Schultz would rather a contract.

The departure of Cody Ceci has left some gaps in the Oilers defensive core, and Dermott could pose as a cheap solution until the team pulls the trigger on a deadline trade in 2025.
