The NHL's end-of-season awards are underway, and the focus is on the Calder Trophy for top rookie honors. The league announced the top three finalists on Wednesday: Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner, Sabres defenseman Owen Power, and Kraken center Matthew Beniers. Members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association will decide the winner.
Stuart Skinner, the Oilers' young goalie, began the season as the backup but quickly became the starter after impressing with his performance. He led all first-year goalies with 29 victories and 50 games played and had a 2.75 goals-against average and .914 save percentage. Skinner's playoff performance won't count in the voting, but he has already started all six games for the Oilers in the playoffs.
If Skinner wins, he will be the first goalie to do so since Steve Mason in the 2008-09 season. His first-year contributions to the team have been significant, and he has shown immense potential and poise. As the playoffs continue, all eyes are on Skinner and the Oilers. The final decision on the Calder Trophy is highly anticipated.
