Since it is technically the off-season for players who won't be participating in the playoffs or training with their team, the decision to accept the invitation to play is left up to them.
The roster is interesting this year in terms of how it was assembled. Among the former Edmonton Oilers on the team, Milan Lucic is notable.
He is undoubtedly playing for his love of the game and country, but under Sutter, he has had a terrible year, and his career is likely on the latter end. While Lucic was a great forward on winning teams in the past, he has become more of a defensive presence on the ice, and his skills have declined over time.
Another ex-Oiler, Ethan Bear, is also noteworthy. He has had some difficult seasons in Carolina, but he still has considerable potential as a young defenseman.
It's doubtful Adam Fantilli will see the ice in Edmonton unless it's a rival team's jersey but it will be fun to see what he can do in the World's against competitors.
