At the outset of the Edmonton Oilers' media day following their heart-wrenching loss in the Stanley Cup Final.
Attention quickly turned to star player Leon Draisaitl and the looming question of his impending free agency.
Draisaitl, who is on the brink of entering the last year of his contract, faces the possibility of extending his tenure with the Oilers as early as July 1st. When pressed about his future plans, Draisaitl offered a cautious yet open response.
«I will give you the most boring answer. I will sit down and talk to my agent, talk to the Oilers and find out what they want. I love playing in Edmonton. I am well aware of what is going on, but I haven't spent much time thinking about what I want to do»
Amid the speculation, Draisaitl affirmed his affinity for the Oilers, expressing an unwavering belief that the team has the potential to clinch the Stanley Cup. Despite his loyalty, he tactfully avoided any firm commitment to re-sign, a strategic move likely aimed at preserving his negotiating leverage.
Recent reports from Chris Johnston of The Athletic highlight the Oilers' determination to secure Draisaitl's future with the team. The organization views his extension as a critical goal for the offseason. However, they are also bracing for the possibility of having to trade him if he shows any hesitation.
Edmonton is not inclined to let [Draisaitl] simply play out the final year of his contract . . . Trying to get him extended is considered a «massive priority» for the Oilers at the outset of this offseason, but they'll pivot if he shows any reluctance to commit. They've got some wiggle room to trade Draisaitl, if it comes to that, since his contract includes a 10-team trade list alongside a no-movement clause.
As the Oilers and their fans hold their breath, the hope is that Draisaitl's bond with the city and his teammates will lead him to re-sign and continue his quest for a championship in Edmonton. If his declarations of loyalty are anything to go by, Draisaitl may yet decide to stay put and help bring the Cup home.
