The Edmonton Oilers are gearing up for what could be a pivotal season in their quest for the Stanley Cup.

With the new season looming, each roster decision becomes critical, highlighted by Allan Mitchell's recent roster projections for the 2024-25 season. According to an article by Allan Mitchell of the Athletic, the Oilers are set to start with a full 23-man squad, signaling some strategic shifts, particularly with veteran players.

One of the notable changes involves Derek Ryan, a seasoned centerman, starting the season with the AHL affiliate, making room for Lane Pederson to step up as the fourth line center. At 27, Pederson brings a fresh energy to the lineup.

Originally from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Pederson went undrafted but carved a path to the NHL through sheer grit and talent. Signed by the Arizona Coyotes in 2016 from Junior hockey, he has since adorned the jerseys of several NHL teams including the San Jose Sharks, Vancouver Canucks, and Columbus Blue Jackets, accumulating valuable experience across 71 NHL games.

Last summer, the Oilers secured Pederson with a two-year contract valued at a modest $775K annually. His performance last season with the Bakersfield Condors was nothing short of impressive, boasting 22 goals and 52 points over 66 games. This productivity is a beacon of hope for the Oilers, who recently saw the departure of younger, quicker players like Ryan McLeod, Warren Foegele, and Dylan Holloway. These exits have left notable gaps in the team's lower lines, potentially hindering their agility and speed.

The inclusion of Pederson could be a strategic move to inject youth and pace into the lineup. Meanwhile, Derek Ryan, at 37, may be nearing the twilight of his NHL career. Although a stalwart fourth-liner and an adept penalty killer, a dip in his training camp performance could further solidify Pederson's position.

The Oilers have also maneuvered through the offseason strategically, shedding salary and opting not to match the St. Louis Blues' offer sheets. This financial prudence may finally afford them the flexibility to maintain a full roster throughout the season. Such depth is crucial, not just for endurance through the regular season but for a successful playoff run.

Looking forward, the Oilers might also integrate prospects like Matthew Savoie, Raphael Lavoie, and James Hamblin more frequently into games, enhancing their internal development. This strategy not only prepares the team for immediate challenges but also solidifies its foundation for the future.

As the new season approaches, the Oilers appear to be assembling a roster that could very well be the most robust of the McDavid era, aiming to blend experience with youthful vigor in pursuit of the ultimate NHL accolade.
