Tyler Ennis, an Edmonton native and former player for the Oilers, has announced his retirement from professional hockey, marking the end of a notable NHL career, followed by a brief stint in Europe.

Known for his agility and scoring ability, Ennis's decision comes after playing just seven games with the DEL's Mannheim Eagles in Germany.

In a candid conversation on the Spittin' Chiclets Podcast, Ennis shared an amusing yet unfortunate incident that influenced his decision to hang up his skates.

"I went full Rey Mysterio. I basically jumped and did a crazy choke slam move, but I got the worst of it. And I ended up in a neck brace," he recounted.

The injury hindered his gameplay significantly, affecting even the basic ability to lift the puck.

"I was in Germany, and I was like, I haven't raised the puck in four games. Every time I shoot it, I'm just whipping it along the ice. I'm like, 'I'm done,'" Ennis explained.

Despite the lack of video evidence of the Mysterio-esque moment, the story itself highlights Ennis's sense of humor and the light-hearted approach he maintained throughout his career. Standing at 5'9», Ennis was often considered an underdog, yet his tenure in the NHL was anything but undersized. During his peak years with the Buffalo Sabres, he consistently hit the 20-goal mark and was close to racking up 50 points each season. His offensive prowess made him a fan favorite, celebrated for both his skill and his spirited personality.

After leaving the Sabres, Ennis became somewhat of a journeyman, donning jerseys for the Minnesota Wild, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, and the Ottawa Senators. Over 700 NHL games, he amassed an impressive 346 points, a testament to his enduring skill and determination.

Ennis's retirement marks the end of an era for a player whose career was as much defined by his on-ice talents as it was by his affable nature and resilience. As he steps away from professional hockey, his legacy as a beloved player and a genuine sports personality continues to resonate with fans across the hockey world.
