Winnipeg Jets' big trade offer for Martin Necas falls through

In a surprising revelation on the Daily Faceoff Podcast, Frank Seravalli shed light on a major NHL trade proposition that never came to fruition.

The Winnipeg Jets, in a bold move, had laid down an impressive trade offer for Carolina Hurricanes' forward Martin Necas, but despite their compelling bid, the trade didn't materialize.

Sabres had a trade for Necas but he wouldn't sign there. Jets offered Rutger, Perfetti and a pick for Necas but deal never consummated (didn't know reason).

The Jets' offer included two of their top prospects, Rutger McGroarty and Cole Perfetti, alongside a valuable draft pick. This combination certainly made it a heavyweight offer, especially considering Necas' relatively modest performance last season, where he posted just 53 points.

Interestingly, while Necas reportedly refused to sign with the Buffalo Sabres, no such issues were disclosed concerning the Jets. This nuance suggests that Winnipeg was ready to integrate Necas with a contract extension, aiming to bolster their long-term roster strength. Such strategic moves are crucial, given Winnipeg's challenge in attracting and retaining star players.

Despite the apparent fit and need, the deal's collapse is a significant setback for both parties involved. For the Hurricanes, missing out on acquiring two high-tier prospects and a draft pick is a tough pill to swallow. On the flip side, the Jets now face the task of finding another trade partner for McGroarty, who has expressed his desire to leave due to insufficient playing time.

It's interesting as well that Necas reportedly wasn't going to sign in Buffalo, but that didn't come out about Winnipeg. Obviously it's harder to attract star players over the long-term in Winnipeg, so for the Jets to make a move to acquire Necas with a contract extension in place would make sense.

Despite the setback, Necas has signed a two-year extension with Carolina, ensuring his stay with one of the NHL's most consistent teams for at least another full season. This move marks a pivotal moment for the Hurricanes as they look to solidify their offensive line-up.
