In Darryl Sutter's second tenure as Flames head coach he was still unable to be truly successful. Darryl served as the team's head coach from 2002 to 2006 and general manager between 2003 and 2010. Sutter rejoined the Flames in 2021 for his second stint as the team's head coach.
After a tough season for the Calgary Flames as they missed the playoffs this year, just behind the Winnipeg Jets. It was highly wanted and expected for Darryl Sutter to be let go in the off season.
There is no surprise here as the Flames players were just not clicking with Darryl's coaching style anymore, due to the fact that just yelling at your team doesn't work the way it used to. A lot of the younger players can't play under that kind of rough coaching style, as it is to old school for today's fast pace game. This may be the reason that Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk moved on from the Flames, obviously there were other reasons at play but Darryl Sutter may have been a big part in the change.
The Flames will be looking to fill the head coach role over the summer, as they will look for someone that fits with the Flames plan and works well with the players individually.
Charlie O'Connor said it best, the old school style of coaching doesn't work anymore. Having that demanding and hard ass presence around your team and organization will quickly run dry.
Now that Flames fans have got what they wanted, hopefully their season turns around next year and they have a coach who can improve the team. Especially with players like Nazem Kadri and Jonathan Huberdeau, both players who struggled in their first year as the style of play was a lot different compared to previous teams. The Calgary Flames should be faster and more aggressive team with a more new school coaching staff.
