The deal will carry an average annual value of $14 million for Draisaitl, who was entering the final season of his deal at a cap hit of $8.5 million. With that in mind, Oilers enthusiasts have their set eyes on the next point of business, captain Connor McDavid.
Earlier on today, Oilers insider Jason Gregor peppered social media with X posts (formally known as twitter) with comments Leon Draisaitl made after the announcement of his contract extension. Gregor asked Leon about Connor's future in Edmonton, and Draisaitl gave fans a glimpse of the potential good news to come.
Draisaitl admits that he and Connor have had conversation about his future with the Oilers. It is well documented that the pair are best friends on the team, and fans can only assume that Connor will want to stick it out with Leon until the bitter end.
Last year, Connor sat down for an interview with hockey insider Mark Spector and they discussed McDavid's potential plans with the club moving forward. This is what McDavid had to say:
Its very clear that Connor McDavid loves the city of Edmonton and is intended to stay until he wins a Stanley Cup. McDavid is due for a contract extension in 2025-2026, and his contract should surpass Leon's monstrous $14 million dollar AAV. Leon will be the wealthiest NHL player next year, but he won't reign supreme very long as McDavid is well deserving of significant bump in pay as well.
Although its all speculative at this point, I think its pretty safe to say that all signs lead to McDavid re-signing with the Oilers in 2025-2026.
