Are the Edmonton Oilers pulling the trigger on a trade soon?
As we await the debut of the highly anticipated NHL season, Stan Bowman has his eyes set on pulling the trigger on a strategic trade.
According to the Hockey News, Turning to the Edmonton Oilers, Bob Stauffer of 630 CHED'S Oilers Now fully expects the Oilers to be in the market for a second-pairing, right-shot defenseman, preferably one with some term left on his contract.
The Hockey News' Edmonton Oilers site writer Finn Marceau said any trade for a defenseman must be a money-in, money-out situation. Marceau suggested the Calgary Flames' Rasmus Andersson and Nashville Predators' Dante Fabbro among potential trade candidates. In addition to Fabbro and Andersson being prime candidates, another trade rumour regarding Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Rasmus Ristolainen has surfaced.
The one name that fits Stauffer's criteria is Flyers defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen, who has three years remaining on his contract at a $5.1 million cap hit.
That would of course make a great deal of sense when it comes to the dollars involved, with Evander Kane having a near identical cap hit to that of Ristolainen with Kane coming it at $5.125 million per season when compared to just $5.1 million per season on Ristolainen's current deal.
Not only would the money work from the Oilers perspective, but it would also allow the Flyers (who are currently just over the NHL's salary cap) to become cap compliant. Jonathan Bailey of Philly Hockey Now believes that would make the Flyers an ideal fit for a trade with the Oilers, pointing to often maligned defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen as a potential fit on the Edmonton blue line.
As further pending updates are awaiting regarding Evander Kane's LTIR status, these are currently the names swirling around in the trade rumour mill.
