Breaking news in Oil Country as the Edmonton Oilers have completed a trade with the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Oilers are trading 26 year old defenceman Ben Gleason to the Flyers in a one-for-one exchange for 25 year old defenceman Ronnie Attard.

According to Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily, Ben Gleason was undrafted, but joined the Dallas Stars system out of the OHL. After a season on the Stars AHL team, Gleason was called up for four games in 2018, but hasn't played in the NHL since.

Gleason joined the Oilers organization on a two way contract, and has been off to a great start on the Bakersfield Condors this season - scoring 4 points in 7 games and being the best defenceman on the team.

As per the NHL, Attard, 25 (3/20/99), was selected by the Flyers in the third round (72nd overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft and collected six points (2g-4a) in 29 NHL games in three seasons with the Flyers (2021-2024). He tallied 59 points (22g-37a) in 123 career AHL contests in two seasons with Lehigh Valley (2022-23, 2023-24).

Gleason had a solid showing for the team during the NHL preseason, unfortunately, it wasn't quite enough to crack the Oilers roster. Now, Gleason has a golden opportunity to make an impact with the Flyers to revamp his career in Pennsylvania.

Oilers analyst Bruce Curlock believes the reasoning behind the trade is alleviate the Condors surplus of veterans. Every AHL team needs to dress a minimum amount of NHL players per game, and the Condors have plenty this year.

Although it wasn't quite the blockbuster trade oilers enthusiasts were hoping for, it will be interesting to see how Ronnie Attard fits into the Oilers organization moving forward.
