According to Oilers insider Jim Matheson, Evander Kane's odds on passing his physical examination are looking slim.

The Edmonton Oilers offseason is officially over, and the squad recently finished up their first skate together as a group. Although Oilers enthusiast got a glimpse of certain line combinations, Evander Kane, a crucial member of their team was unfortunately sidelined.

Kane has been suffering through a nasty sports hernia which has severely hindered his offensive production. Kane's hernia essentially made him a non-factor throughout the 2024 post season, and his symptoms were very clear to the naked eye.

During the playoffs, Kane was unable to sit on the Oilers bench due to the pain he was in. Kane has two years remaining on his contract, which carries a cap hit of $5.125M.

Jim Matheson is indicating that Evander Kane will not be healthy enough to pass his physical examination, and surgical intervention is the likely outcome. With that being said, surgery would require Kane to be put on LTIR in order to rehabilitate post operation.

Assuming Kane undergoes surgery, Matheson indicates that a timeline for a return will be discussed upon completion. Until then, Oilers fans can anticipate that Kane will be undergoing surgery and will likely be placed on LTIR. Being on LTIR will have major implications on the Oilers cap situation moving forward, freeing up some room for GM Stan Bowman.
