As per Finn Marceau of the Hockey News, Among those names is former Oiler William Lagesson. The Swedish defenceman was selected by the Oilers in the fourth round, 91st overall, in 2014. He played 57 games with Edmonton from 2019-20 to 2021-22, before being sent to Montreal in exchange for Brett Kulak.
Lagesson was once considered one of the top defensive prospects on the Oilers, but was never able to gain much traction on the team. Lagesson was called up several times from the Oilers farm affiliate in Bakersfield, but always found himself being sent back down in a constant disappointing cycle. Now, Lagesson will be eagerly awaiting to see if he gets claimed on waivers, but it's highly unlikely.
The NHL has been buzzing today - teams have been making shocking moves sending shockwaves down the league. The Oilers announced earlier today that they placed top prospect Raphael Lavoie, Drake Caggiula, Josh Brown, and Olivier Rodrigue on waivers, in addition to former Oilers D-man Jordan Oesterly being waived by the Calgary Flames yesterday.
As per Marceau, The deadline for teams to submit their opening day rosters is 5pm ET on Monday, October 7th. The North American portion of the NHL regular season starts on Wednesday night, including the Oilers' season opener against the Jets.
