Josh Brown was acquired by the Oilers during the offseason and was signed to a three year deal worth $1 MM AAV per season. With that in mind, Brown was brought in for his big 6'5 frame and his gritty style of play. The decision came after the departure of Vincent Desharnais, with the Oilers needing a suitable replacement on the Oilers third defensive pairing.
Brown posted some downright abysmal possession numbers over the past two seasons in a Coyotes uniform, only controlling 39.7% of expected goals when on the ice at even strength. He does carry some special teams value, but even with receiving considerable time shorthanded, his low average ice time (14:45 last season) evidences how sparingly he's used at even strength. Many fans have been questioning his acquisition in the first place.
According to Edmonton Journal's David Staples, only Brown has failed to make the roster for this final exhibition game. This is a significant move then, as Brown was expected to start beside Brett Kulak this year and had been slotted into that role all preseason.
With the emergence of Travis Dermott during the preseason, the Oilers could likely be placing Josh Brown on waivers at any point. Josh Brown was expected to be on the starting roster, but his underwhelming performances over the past few weeks has earned him a spot in the press box.
