This loss against their provincial rivals marks the third loss in the role for the team. I don't think anyone saw this coming, especially considering that the rebuilding Calgary Flames are still undefeated 3 games into the season.
The team came out firing within the first 10 minutes of the first period. Jeff Skinner tallied his first goal of the season and the Oilers were starting to look like their old selves again. Things started to fall apart after Corey Perry tipped a beauty in from the top of the crease, but after a lengthy review, the goal was called back.
Regardless, the officials determined that there was goaltender interference and pulled Perry's goal off the board.
A later statement from the NHL explained why they determined there was goalie interference on the play.
As per the NHL, Video review determined Edmonton's Corey Perry had a significant presence in the crease which impaired Dan Vladar's ability to play his position prior to his goal,» the statement said. «The decision was made in accordance with Rule 69.1, which states in part, «Goals should be disallowed only if: (1) an attacking player, either by his positioning or by contact, impairs the goalkeeper's ability to move freely within his crease or defend his goal.
Later on, another goal by Viktor Arvidsson was deemed offside and was also called back. After the two disallowed goals, the Oilers struggled to maintain momentum and eventually let in four unanswered goals as they lost 4-1 in a decisive loss. Hopefully the Oilers get their game going as another 3-9-1 start is looming over their heads.
