During the NHL offseason, the Edmonton Oilers took a significant hit to their defensive core. One of the notable departures was Vincent Desharnais, and the Oilers pulled the trigger on big Josh Brown in attempts to fill the void. The Edmonton Oilers made a questionable signing, signing Brown to a 3 year deal worth $1 MM AAV per season. Despite the Oilers clearly overpaying, the Oilers took a calculated risk that hasn't worked out so far.
The Edmonton Oilers has extremely high hopes for Josh Brown to start the year. As the NHL preseason intensified, it became increasingly clear that Brown needed sharpen up aspects of his defensive game. As his disappointing training camp came to an abrubt end, the Oilers ultimately sent him down to the Condors for further development. According to sources, Josh Brown finds himself demoted yet again, being bumped down to the third pairing on the Oilers AHL affiliate in Bakersfield.
Thankfully, the Edmonton Oilers cap situation won't be affected with Brown playing in the minors, but his performance has been disappointing to say the least. Still, the Oilers find themselves stuck with him for the next 3 seasons. Until Josh Brown improves, the Oilers are left with an untreatable asset within their farm system.
