I just want to emphasize that these are preseason games, so no one should be too upset about the Oilers results this evening. As much as it sucks losing to Calgary, I think it's fairly safe to say that the Flames needed a moral victory more than the Oilers.
The Edmonton Oilers played a split squad game tonight for the Battle of Alberta. One game was held at Rogers Place (6-3 loss), and another at the Scotia Bank Saddledome in Calgary (6-1 loss). Although it was a double loss for the Oil, Connor McDavid seems to be in great form.
One silver lining for the Edmonton Oilers tonight was captain Connor McDavid. He scored a total classic - starting with the puck in his own end, taking it coast-to-coast, and singlehandedly beating the Flames goaltender.
According to Brenden Escott, Connor Clattenberg was buzzing and was generally quite noticeable when he was on the ice. Engaged physically, including trying to initiate a scrap. Clattenburg absolutely wired a puck off the post as well. Solid performance all around for the OHL young gun, be he did go -2 on the ice.
Noah Philp impressed again with a heavy forecheck. I don't think much minor league seasoning will be needed before he's ready for NHL action. He's a smart player that understands what's required in a bottom-six role.
Podkolzin, who was lights out for the Oilers during their overtime win against the Winnipeg Jets was really quiet tonight and had a tough go. The young Russian was kept off the score sheet was a -2 rating on the ice.
The Edmonton Oilers will get back on the horse as they fly to Winnipeg for a preseason matchup against the Jets at Canada Life Centre on September 25.
