Unlikely prospect has emerged as the Oilers hidden gem
As the NHL preseason is well underway, the Oilers have had some surprising breakout candidates.
Among the prospects who have been performing well for the Oilers are Raphael Lavoie, Matthew Savoie, and Noah Philp. Despite all three prospects showcasing a tremendous skill in the first 3 games, young Noah Philp has emerged as the Oilers hidden gem.
As per Daily Hive, he plays a responsible 200-foot game and has looked fairly comfortable with the speed of the game. Philp is certainly NHL-sized, standing at six-foot-three and 198 lbs, making him the biggest of the players angling for that 4C role.
The opportunity is certainly there for Philp if he can continue to impress over the rest of training camp. He lacks the NHL experience of the other players, which could hamper his odds, but there is a definitive chance he could wind up grabbing ahold of that spot at some point later in the season, if not the start.
His performance so far has been somewhat of a surprise for Oilers enthusiasts. Last year, Philp decided to hang up his skates for an indefinite period of time, unsure if he even wanted to play hockey anymore at all. After taking some personal time to travel and live life, Philp decided to return to the game, and he's been crushing it.
Oilers fans will be keeping a close eye on him for the remainder of the preseason. His solid play so far has earned him some consideration for a mid-season call up. Although his chances at cementing a full-time job on the team are relatively small, he's emerged as one of the best prospects on the team.
