His teammate, Leon Draisaitl has been a focal point for the NHL during the offseason. According to Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli, he believes that Leon's contract will to end up being probably one that starts in the $14 millions, which would make Leon the highest paid NHL in 2024-25.
Now, as for Connor, the Oilers could be in a really tight salary cap situation when GM Stan Bowman pulls the trigger on McDavid's contract extension. The three time Hart trophy MVP will be due for a massive bump in pay. If Leon Draisaitl gets inked to a deal worth $14 million AAV, one can only assume McDavid's contract in 2025-26 will surpass that. Perhaps a team friendly contract could be considered in order to make a deal work long-term.
The other part of the conversation is wether or not McDavid will actually re-sign in Edmonton. Much of that debate will reside on the shoulders on Leon Draisaitl. The dynamic duo have emerged as the top scoring pair in the NHL through the past decade, and there's no shadow of doubt Connor and Leon will want to remain together.
In an Interview with Mark Spector last year, Connor spoke to his desire to stay with the Oilers until they reach the ultimate goal of winning the Stanley Cup.
Connor also has a well established relation with head coach Kris Knoblauch, which also leads fans to believe that a long-term deal is within the realm of consideration.
