As a sports journalist, there's nothing more difficult than reporting heartbreaking news, and unfortunately, that's what we have to do today. On Sunday, the Metro Jets of the United States Hockey League announced the tragic passing of defenseman Braydin Lewis:
The 19-year-old Lewis had been battling cancer for some time, and according to the Jets, he passed away late on Saturday night, surrounded by family. Lewis was a promising defenseman with dreams of playing in the NHL, but unfortunately, his battle with cancer cut his career short.
"After his diagnosis last summer, he was determined to return for his third season," the Jets wrote on Sunday. "Not only did he return, but he played while undergoing treatment. Lewey's strength and willingness was an inspiration to the team, and he showed up to support his teammates at every opportunity."
On behalf of Oilers Daily, we extend our deepest condolences to the Lewis family during this difficult time. May Braydin rest in peace.
