In their ongoing quest to fortify their defense with size and strength, the Toronto Maple Leafs have taken another significant step.

The club's recent acquisition strategy under the guidance of Brad Treliving has been to enlist notably large players, continuing a trend that promises to reshape their defensive landscape.

The roster of towering talents includes seasoned players like Chris Tanev at 6'2", Cade Webber at 6'6", and Oliver Ekman-Larsson also at 6'2", along with first-round pick Ben Danford standing at 6'1". While the potential addition of Jani Hakanpaa, who stands at 6'7", is still under consideration, the pattern is unmistakable: Toronto is opting for height and heft on the blue line.

This strategy was further reinforced by Ryan McCleary's performance at the summer development camp. The 6'3" defensive prospect demonstrated enough skill and promise to secure himself an AHL contract with the Toronto Marlies, as reported by Tony Androckitis. His robust physique and right-handed shot caught the attention of the Maple Leafs' staff, culminating in a contract that has also been well-received by pundits, including Kyle Cushman from The Score.

''Glad Ryan McCleary is getting an AHL deal with Toronto. Good frame at 6-foot-3, right-shot D-man, and impressed Leafs staff at development camp.''

McCleary is emerging from his fourth season in the WHL with the Swift Current Broncos. Over 56 games, he tallied an impressive stat line of 11 goals, 25 assists, and 36 points, highlighted by a remarkable +31 plus/minus ratio for the 2023-24 season. This statistic indicates a significant impact on the ice, contributing to more goals for his team while minimizing the opposition's scores.

Although McCleary is set to join the AHL's Marlies rather than stepping directly into the NHL with the Maple Leafs, his future looks bright. He is expected to log substantial minutes with the Leafs' new ECHL affiliate, the Cincinnati Cyclones, further honing his skills in professional settings.

The Maple Leafs' commitment to beefing up their defense with physically imposing players underscores a clear strategy: bigger is indeed better for their blue line ambitions. This approach not only enhances their defensive solidity but also sets a clear physical standard for the team as they continue to build a robust defensive unit capable of competing at the highest levels.
