Bob Stauffer revealed on a segment of Oilers Now that the team may be looking at a strategic waiver pickup to bolster the teams defence.

It's no secret that the Edmonton Oilers defensive core took a massive hit during the NHL offseason. With the departure of Vincent Desharnais, Philip Broberg, and Cody Ceci, the Oilers find themselves depleted concerning the blue-line.

The Oilers made some minor splashes during the offseason, signing big D-man Josh Brown to a 3 year deal. The Oilers also brought in Ty Emberson and Travis Dermott in efforts to fill the void. But there have been concerns raised over the overall strength of the Oilers defensive pairings, specifically on the right side.

According to Ryan Hall of Oilers Daily, Stauffer name drops a couple of options including Cale Fleury and Jaycob Megna as possible options as the Oilers only have $830,000 in cap space available.

Fleury was drafted in 2017 by the Montreal Canadiens who then went on to play the last three years with the Seattle Kraken. Considered a shutdown defenseman, the 25-year-old who is a right-handed shot stands at six foot 1 and 212 lbs and carries a cap hit of $800,000. Adding him would be right in line with the money they have available and could give them the defensemen they need for this season.

Megna is a far heavier player as he is 31 years old, stands at 6 foot 6 and 220 lbs he holds a cap hit of $775,000. Originally drafted by the Anaheim Ducks he had spent most of his career on the West Coast with the San Jose Sharks, ducks and the Kraken. He then moved east to the Chicago Blackhawks and now is currently with the Florida Panthers.

These may be cheap options for the Oilers to strengthen the overall blue-line. These factors may also depend on how Ty Emberson, Josh Brown, and Travis Dermott perform early on.
