Derek Ryan out with injury
Breaking news in Oil Country as it was just announced that Derek Ryan is suffering from an injury suffered in the preseason.
As per CBS, Ryan (undisclosed) only attended the late stages of Friday's morning skate and is regarded as day-to-day, per Tony Brar of Oilers TV.
Ryan won't be in the lineup for the Oilers' last preseason game Friday against Vancouver, but he might recover in time for Opening Night versus Winnipeg on Oct. 9. He had five goals and 12 points in 70 regular-season games in 2023-24. He's expected to serve primarily on the fourth line this campaign when the 37-year-old is healthy.
The details of his injuries are unclear at this point, but his health status has been listed day-today. Wether or not he will be good to go for the Oilers home opener against the Winnipeg Jets on October 9th remains uncertain.
Back in 2023, The Edmonton Oilers signed forward Derek Ryan to a two-year extension with an average annual value of $900,000. Derek Ryan has been a solid veteran for the Oilers 4th line and is considered a great locker room presence.
Although having Derek Ryan out is a considerable loss for the Oilers, it does present a golden opportunity regarding Noah Philp. Philp has been battling hard for Ryan's job all preseason long, posting impressive numbers and noticeable performances. If Noah Philp manages to string together one last great game against the Vancouver Canucks tonight, fans can anticipate Noah Philp being a lock to crack the roster.
Could Ryan's job on the 4th line now be jeopardy? Hopefully he's back sooner than later, but Noah Philp will be making the most out of this situation.
