Flyers captain Sean Couturier collided with Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner behind the net and the hit sent Skinner to the ice. When it happened, the Edmonton Oilers players knew they needed to respond physically and especially after failing to do so in previous games of the season.
It was defenseman Troy Stecher who stepped up to challenge Sean Couturier to a fight despite being much smaller than his opponent. Though Couturier had the clear upper hand in the fight, the fact that Troy Stecher was willing to stand up for his goaltender sent a message to both teams.
Immediately after the fight of Stetcher the veteran forward Corey Perry took things up a notch. He got into a heated exchange with Joel Farabee on the next faceoff and as soon as the puck dropped they entered in a solid fight. Corey Perry even continued to chirp Farabee on his way to the penalty box.
These two fights provided the Oilers with the spark they needed to win this game. The team's energy took a step up and they were able to generate offensive pressure and eventually tie the game. The momentum carried them through overtime where they secured their first win of the season.
With this gritty win under their belt are hoping to shake off their slow start and refocus on their goal of competing for the President's Trophy.
