Evander Kane listed as deadline trade target per Allan Mitchell
As we look ahead to the highly anticipated NHL regular season, the Oilers try to make strategic decisions in order to maximize their cap space.
Evander Kane is set to enter his third year of his contract. As a player, he poses as an electrifying power forward who delivers thunderous hits and delivers timely scoring when needed. Although Kane has proven to be an effective asset for the Oilers, there's been a steady decline in production since Parick Maroon sliced his wrist open back in 2022 against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
With that being said, Allan Mitchel from the Athletic suggests that the Oilers should consider moving Evander Kane at the deadline if he isn't healthy come spring time.
The reason for including Kane as a trade option comes down to cap. The Oilers have no need to LTIR Kane to begin the season, but there are questions about his ability to play the full season. Bowman isn't likely to use that option if Kane is healthy and playing productive hockey.
Mitchell reports that Bowman should seriously consider a deadline trade if Evander is still dealing with nagging injuries leading up to the post-season. When fully recovered, there's a number of teams who would love Evander's services. But ultimately, it all comes down to how healthy Evander is down the stretch.
Last season, at less than 100 percent, Kane scored 0.81 goals per 60 and 1.62 points per 60 five-on-five for Edmonton, via Natural Stat Trick. After a slow start in outscoring at five-on-five, Kane was on the ice for 53 percent of the goals and expected goals after Dec. 1, again via Natural Stat Trick.
