The Edmonton Oilers had a great opportunity to close the gap on their losing record, but ultimately fell short in dramatic fashion. Although the team managed to scrape out a point, the Oilers desperately needed a moral victory.
According to Nestor Quixtan of Sportskeeda, the Oilers fell to the Hurricanes because of three important reasons.
#3. The Hurricanes didn't quit
The Edmonton Oilers jumped to an early lead in the first. Then, a McDavid power-play goal made it 2-0 early in the second period. Just when it seemed like the Oilers would skate away with the win, the Canes didn't quit.
#2. The Oilers' third-period struggles continue
The Edmonton Oilers' woes reemerged on Tuesday night as they couldn't hold the lead in the third period. Heading into the game, the Oilers had conceded nine goals in the third period this season, including two three-goal periods.
#1. The Oilers ran out of gas in OT
The Canes seemed to find another gear in the OT period. After McDavid and the Oilers dominated the first half of the OT period, the Canes took over in the latter half, making the Oilers look completely gassed.
Although the Oilers looked a lot better on special teams, the two goal lead curse continues to haunt the Edmonton Oilers. Although fans aren't hitting the panic button quite yet, another 3-9-1 regular season start looks over their head.
