As the Edmonton Oilers entered training camp, the team acquired several key PTO's to bolster their strength in certain areas. As it stands, Dermott is the last man standing regarding players who were brought in on a professional tryout.
Yesterday, Dermott had a very strong performance against the Seattle Kraken. He scored the second goal for the Oilers, demonstrating impressive finishing capabilities. In addition to his goal, Dermott was absolutely flying last night. He was noticeably joining the offensive rush, and was defensively sounds in the Oilers back end.
According to Liam McCormick form Oilers Daily, Dermott is currently at Oilers training camp on a professional tryout offer, and his play seems to have earned him a deal. According to the 2 Mutts Hockey Podcast, contract talks have progressed this morning.
Travis Dermott is a 27 year old left shot defender and former second round draft pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Dermott has gone on to play 329 career NHL games with the Leafs, Canucks, and Coyotes, posting decent analytics results in that time. Dermott even has 22 games of playoff experience, which is more than both Josh Brown and Troy Stecher.
The Oilers currently have a battle for two defensive spots: the second pair and the third pairing right side.
After the game, Dermott spoke in a post game interview with Tony Brar, and it appears that Dermott has formed a close bond with assistant coach Paul Coffey. Dermott spoke to his influential coaching style, and praised the coach for his words of wisdom on the bench between shifts.
All in all, it appears that Dermott has earned himself a league minimum contract, and we'll be keeping a close eye out for an official announcement.
