The Edmonton Oilers announce Evander Kane's timelines
Edmonton Oilers sniper Evander Kane has recently completed surgery in order to repair multiple injuries sustained through the 2024-25 NHL season.
Oilers Insider Jim Matheson revealed on X (formally known as twitter) some timelines that have Oilers fans cringing. As it stands, Evander Kane will be sidelined for the next 4-6 months. This prognosis has huge implications for GM Bowman's salary cap, and the overall success of the team.
Jim Matheson suggests that Evander Kane's rehabilitation will extend far beyond the NHL trade deadline, and fans can bet that Kane will not be returning to the team until the 2025 post season in April.
According to Blade of Steel, "Early feeling is Evander Kane will be out 4 to 6 months after his surgery (two sports hernias, four muscle tears) in New York last Friday which is fairly loose timeline. Six months is past March 7 trade deadline, But still waiting for Oiler announcement after talking to doctors" Matheson said.
Kane, 33, registered his ninth-career 20+ goal season during the 2023-24 campaign with the Edmonton Oilers. His 24 goals were good for fourth on the Oilers with Zach Hyman (54), Leon Draisaitl (41) and Connor McDavid (32) as the only three players ahead of him. Losing such a key piece of their lineup is going to hurt the Edmonton Oilers, but the team has some reinforcements they hope to rely on. In the summer, the Oilers went out and signed Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson, both of whom can put the puck in the back of net and fill Kane's role.
Having Evander Kane out for the next 4-6 months ill mean an inevitable position on LTIR, freeing up over $5 MM dollars in cap space for GM Stan Bowman.
