Sportskeeda notes that according to reports, the Oilers have already spoken to Shattenkirk's agent as they consider signing the 35-year-old. Shattenkirk has played over 900 NHL games and could provide experience and offensive production from the blue line.
It's no secret by now that the Edmonton Oilers have taken a massive hit to their defensive core during the NHL offseason. The departure of
Philip Broberg,
Cody Cecil, and
Vincent Desharnais has left the blue-line depleted, forcing the team to find suitable replacements.
The Oilers did manage to scrape together some new additions regarding
Travis Dermott and
Ty Emberson, but it's evidently clear the team is still looking to bolster their blue line.
After spending the 2023-24 campaign with the Boston Bruins, Shattenkirk remains an unrestricted free agent. The offensive defenceman netted six goals and 24 points over 61 games last season.
Kevin Shattenkirk is a proven defender with tons of veteran experience under his belt. He's coming off a respectable season with the Bruins, but is ultimately looking for a new city to call home.
Drafted 14th overall by the Colorado Avalanche in 2007, Shattenkirk has notched a total 952 NHL games. The Oilers have plenty of leadership already, but having Shattenkirk's presence on the ice would only benefit the overall strength of their defensive core.
