According to the Hockey News, the Oilers used a second-round draft pick (62nd overall in 2018) on Rodrigue and have spent years developing the netminder, presumably to be part of their future. Edmonton potentially has need for a backup goalie over the longer term, considering their current No. 2, Calvin Pickard, is 32 years of age and has a limited track record as a full-time NHLer. But Rodrigue has yet to play a single NHL regular season game, and after all they've invested in him, the Oilers could lose him in free agency next summer without having even given him a shot.
During a tough outing against the Seattle Kraken, Rodrigue let in 4 goals on 5 shots, all in the span of 14 minutes. The preseason is arguably the most crucial aspect of a prospects career, and Rodrigue has only shown that he's not an NHL calibre goaltender quite yet.
Rodrigue's poor performance during the preseason has sparked some conversation in Oil Country. Should the Oilers pursue another depth goaltender in the event Calvin Pickard gets injured?
During the preseason previous game against the Seattle Kraken, Oilers backup goaltender Calvin Pickard left the game to an undisclosed injury. These events unfolded after Noah Philp crashed into Pickard, resulting in a nasty collision with the goal post. After Pickard went for evaluation, Rodrigue stepped in for a rare opportunity, but ultimately blew his shot.
