Stan Bowman issues major statement on his decision to waive Josh Brown
It was recently announced that the Edmonton Oilers decided to place big D-man Josh Brown on waivers following a poor training camp.
Oilers Insider reported that Josh Brown was arguably one of the more controversial signings by the Edmonton Oilers over the summer. The team signed Brown to a 3 year deal worth $1 MM AAV per season, a huge overpayment to say the least.
The Oilers took a big gamble on bringing big Josh Brown, who's 6'5 frame was meant to replace the departed Vincent Desharnais. With that being said, Josh Brown performed so badly over the course of training camp, the Oilers sent him packing to Bakersfield.
According to the Hockey News, Stan Bowman made an appearance on the Bob Stauffer's Oilers Now radio show yesterday. He made some comments about the competition on the Oilers roster and why Brown was ultimately waived.
"He didn't have his best training camp, I think that was apparent in talking to him," Bowman began. He continued, "one of the things you have to do as a team is evaluate who deserves to be here to start the season. We made the determination that his game wasn't where we wanted it to be."
"Obviously, we hope that he can get it together. I thought he was beat out by some other players, that happens," Bowman told Stauffer. "That doesn't mean he's not valuable, it just means we want to get him going and get him back up to where we need him to be to help our team."
"We are here to reward the players who bring the most to the lineup, that have earned it."
As it stands, Josh Brown will be looking to refine his game in the Oilers farm system. Perhaps if another opportunity presents itself at the NHL level, Brown will come in with a different mindset and a polished game.
