It was announced yesterday that Raphael Lavoie and Cole Schwindt were picked up off waivers by the Las Vegas Golden Knights from Edmonton, sending shockwaves down the NHL.
But now, things have taken a sudden twist. According to Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily, Bob Stauffer alluded yesterday that the Oilers could take Lavoie back if Vegas waives him again, and the situation came true. Apparently, Vegas was surprised that they actually got two forwards on waivers, and decided to cut Lavoie.
The Oilers have been getting their depth players picked apart by vultures all offseason long. Losing Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway to the St. Louis Blues via offer sheets was bad enough, but now having their top prospect gone via waivers poured salt in the wound.
You have to feel somewhat bad for Raphael Lavoie in this circumstance, who has probably been dealing with volatile emotions the past 24 hours. Just as things started to look promising regarding potentially cracking the Golden Knights Roster, Lavoie finds himself back on the waiver wire.
Now, the latest reports from Derek Van Diest suggest that the Oilers will be reclaiming Rapael Lavoie back on waivers.
As per Oilers Nation, Edmonton decided to start the season with Corey Perry as the team's fourth-line right winger but they would be able to send Lavoie down to the AHL without waivers if they claim him back from the Golden Knights. Teams have the right of first refusal for 30 days on players they lost on waivers, so it's up to the Oilers if they want Lavoie. As it stands, it looks like Lavoie will once again be an Oiler.
